Be a successful manager not only a good manager
To answer the question of How to be a successful manager not only a good manager?, you need to consider multiple anglesAngle I:Management's
most simple and common definition is getting things done through others
using leadership, manager has authority over others which is big
good is easy but being successful requires hiring successful team, he
needs to recruit talented and skilled team members who he can trust and
empower to achieve the organizations mission.Selecting
and recruiting successful team is human resources job but a connection
is required with the manager so he can list his requirements and he
needs to attend the selecting process and use his ability to choose the
best during oral and written interviews. Angle II: Successful manager realizes the difference between being manager and individual performer:
Angle III:The manager needs to choose his behavior according to the organization goals
Gets things done through own efforts
Gets things done through others
Angle IV:Successful manager has to be successful during crisis, expected behavior:* Stay calm: leader’s emotions are contagious so manager must absorb fears.* Be visible: people want someone to control damage. Ex. After sinking of submarine, Russian president continued vacation.* Put people before business: deal with physical & emotional needs.* Tell the truth: Determine the facts then be honest.* Know when to get back to work: use energy to move forward.Angle V: Successful manager needs to realize where he is, there are three levels:
Direct activities towards earning money.
Finance from sale of goods & services.
Easy to measure success.
Direct activities towards generating social impact.
Finance from government & donations.
Hard to measure success.
Supervising donors & volunteers.
Managers focus on being spokes person, leader & resource allocator.
Angle VI:Manager is required to make decisions, make sure they are ethical:A - Utilitarian approach:Ethical concept that moral behaviors produce greatest benefit for greatest number.Manager considers effect of each alternative on all parties then chooses the one with majority benefit.Ex. No smoking at work even if manager smokes.B - Individualism approach:Ethical concept that moral behaviors are those promote best long term interests.This approach believes integrity & honesty are better for LT interests.Ex.
Pre conventional level
Post conventional level
Ex. Mandela / Mother Teresa
- Sacrifice hero
- Fulfill duties
Follow self-chosen principles
Independent ethical manner
Ex. Navy pilot in WW2 ignored orders to go back to coast in order to save others & risked his life.
Don’t cut costs to show high profit, be honest & tell the truth
better on LT, as people will know & you would loose credibility.C - Moral-rights approach:Ethical concept that moral decision maintains rights of people affected because people have fundamental rights & liberties.Moral rights:Free consent right: Treat people as they want to be treated. Ex. No sexual harassment.Privacy right: People control their private lives.Freedom of conscience right: Not violating moral or religious norms. Ex. Not asked to spy.Free speech right: Able to criticize. Ex. Whistle blower.Due process right: Fair treatment & impartial hearing.Life & safety right: Living healthy & safely. Ex. No dangerous jobs.D – Justice approach:Ethical concept that moral decisions are based on equity, fairness & impartiality.It is close to law domain thinking: clear & not complex.I
